"The Greatest Gift"

(From The Upper Room Daily Devotional)

"God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." - John 3:16 (NIV)

DURING the Sunday evening service at my church in Louisville, the interim pastor read from Matthew 2:1-12 and talked about the magi coming to worship the newborn King of the Jews. He wanted us to think about what Christmas is really all about - giving. The magi gave from their hearts and from their treasures to the Christ child.

In Jesus Christ, God gave us a gift that cannot be measured. What can we give to our Lord in return? The gifts of worship, devotion, and service. But we can also remind ourselves and others of the reason for Christmas by sharing the wonderful story of how God became a human in Jesus Christ. By sharing this story, we can offer comfort and hope to others.

Instead of being caught up in the rush of buying things, we can stop to remind ourselves and others that Christmas is when God gave us the greatest gift: Jesus. In return, devoting ourselves to serving God is the best way we can give thanks for God's great gift of love.
Prayer: Lord, help us to remember that you gave the whole world the greatest gift anyone could ever give. Help us to serve you in ways that honor your gift. In Jesus' name. Amen.
